"Little Dragons" and Kids II classes

We believe children flourish in the company of interested, responsive adults who understand their development and teach them accordingly. Such instructors exercise reasonable control, which sets limits on behavior without frightening, humiliating, or coercing children. Effective instructors take time to listen to each child's ideas, engage in conversation, and laugh with children when something funny happens.

From infancy on, young children need opportunities to develop large and small muscle skills, help in learning to get along with other people, including their peers, and guidance in coping with their feelings so they can be emotionally healthy and happy. Children need to have their creative abilities drawn out, their language skills developed, and their reasoning and problem-solving potential encouraged. All children deserve the opportunity to make the most of themselves and their abilities.

At Yama-Kan Kajukenbo, our children's programs are second to none. We realize that although the ability to defend oneself is important, there are far more important benefits to be had from involving your child in a martial arts program.

The Little Dragons Classes start at 4½ years of age and continue to 6 years of age. This program consists of the following:

  • Gross Motor Skill Development
  • Positive Behavioral Changes
  • Listening Skills Development
  • Following Directions and getting along with others
  • Age specific curriculum that allows them to progress at their own pace
  • Increased courtesy & manners
  • Improved Self-Confidence
  • Improved Focus and Concentration (which prepares them for school)
  • And Much, Much More...

In Kids II classes, students build on the principles of the Little Dragons class, but focus more on the details and technical precision of movements, just like in the adult classes. The difference is kids have more people of their own size and strength with whom to practice movements and drills.

Equipment required for both classes:

  • Kajukenbo gi (required): All kids who sign up for training at the school must wear a gi (Kimono).
We realize that Gis/Kimonos can get expensive, especially as kids grow so quickly. We carry the basic gi for your child to train in.
  • Shorts and T-shirt (to be worn under gi)

It is the goal of Yama-Kan Kajukenbo to create an environment that provides children with the opportunity to:

  • DEVELOP a positive self-esteem, feel unique, and know they are valued individuals.
  • ESTABLISH long lasting bonds with teachers and peers based on mutual respect and trust.
  • BUILD their strengths, muscular coordination and physical skills.
  • ESTABLISH a foundation for sound health and safety habits.
  • DEVELOP problem solving skills, to concentrate and to think creatively.
  • LEARN to be responsible for their own actions.
  • LEARN to act independently and with confidence.
  • LEARN to interact comfortably and happily with peers and adults outside of the family.

By embodying the above principles into our children's martial arts classes, Yama-Kan Kajukenbo has made a strong commitment to the development of today's youth. Starting ages 4½ and up, our special structured programs will improve your child's performance in all other sports as well as improve study habits and concentration.
